planning to VISIT THE CHRISTMAS FAIR OF Sibiu?

Well, you sure chose well! It’s that time of the year, time for the holidays, when families gather together, when friends reunite, and when everybody wants to explore a new place where the Christmas feeling is present. All you need is good accommodation.
Christmas is not just about a “white and red” Santa or colourful gifts, Christmas is more then this. It’s more about the moment when people discover hope and love.
And there’s no better place for you to experience the magic of Christmas than at probably the most beautiful Christmas Fair in Romania : the Christmas Fair of Sibiu. Sibiu is one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval towns, a historic city known worldwide for it’s beauty and architecture, and also for the Cultural Capital of Europe title, received in 2007. And now, Sibiu is also the Christmas Capital of Romania. Or so we declare it. 😉

Beyond it’s glorious past, the city has a special air. It is said that it’s enough to come here once and you will certainly return for a second or even third time …Or, maybe even move here, as Forbes magazine named Sibiu “Europe’s 8th most idyllic place to live”. As it has become more popular over the years, with tourist numbers increasing continuously, Sibiu’s accommodation options have become more diverse too. It so happens that if you want to check-in right in the heart of everything, you can choose from quite a big number of spaces.

An amazing option if you never want to leave the Small Square is The Council. It’s a 4-star hotel located in the heart of Sibiu, right in the building with the Council Tower, a few steps away from the Bridge of Lies and the Big Square, a couple of hundred meters from the Brukenthal Museum, the Huet Square, the Church of St. Ursuline and many more! Each of the 10 rooms comes with a perfect view of the historical center of Sibiu. With prices varying between 50 and 149 euros per night, it’s not a low-budget option. However, it’s totally worth it! Especially if you think you’ll actually be breathing history, as the building in which the hotel operates is Sibiu’s first city hall. Hence the name – THE COUNCIL.

Just a few extra steps further you’ll find the Luxembourg House. Yes, we spelled it right, Luxembourg. The 3 star Luxemburg House, is one of Sibiu’s most particular accommodation options. The building in which it operates still features the original 13th-century architectural elements. Each room has it’s own particular style, and from each window you can closely observe what’s going on in the historic center – concerts, street theater, festivals. Moreover, if you want to visit Sibiu and it’s surroundings, you can do it in organized tours, guided tours provided by the owners. Also, evenings are magical here! In the restaurant on the ground floor you can enjoy theater plays, concerts, or just enjoy a quite dinner while listening to fine piano music arrangements. The prices for accommodation vary between 50 and 100 euro per night, and it would be best to make arrangements early on, as it is quite a popular location.

Also in the old town, but a bit out of the way of all the madness, you’ll find Teatro, a somewhat new addition to Sibiu’s hotel scene. Teatro – Hotel & Restaurant is the option that combines the stay in the historic center with culinary passions. The room rates go from 59 euros per night, and here you’ll find the perfect spot to catch a break. The furniture is painted in warm colors, and the decor is quite special, as it is prepared down to the last detail. In addition, you can serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, all prepared by the finest chefs in the city. Wagyu beef is the star of the place.

On course, all highly central hotels come at a price, if you want to be part of all the action. But if you like to approach the idea of a friendly budget, it wouldn’t hurt to choose the 4-star Hugo Guesthouse. It’s a lovely guesthouse, in a quiet area of Sibiu, a 15-minute walk from the historic center. Hugo Guesthouse also features a bistro and offers free wi-fi access and air-conditioned rooms. The menu of the day at the on-site bistro can be a set menu, or you can make your own by choosing from a list of dishes. Such a menu costs no more than 4 euros, and the prices for a room at the boarding house are, on average, 50 euro per room.

On the other hand, Sibiu offers alternatives somewhat more quiet and far removed from the historical center, and they are 5 stars. Literally! The famous Hilton brand has a hotel in Sibiu at the very outskirts of the city. Of course, you can expect nothing less than 5-star services! Hilton Hotel in Sibiu also offers 3 dining options, a spa, and spacious rooms, elegantly furnished and equipped with the latest audio-video technology. The hotel is right next door to the Sibiu Zoo and the Astra Village Museum in the Dumbrava Forest, 2 top tourist destinations in the city. Accommodation prices start from about 90 euros per night, and they include breakfast and complimentary spa access.

If you’re looking for something truly special, you can choose to stay at the Ecvestria Guesthouse. It’s a secluded and quiet place situated on a hillside, away from the urban turmoil. The pension has 4 rooms, of which 2 twin and 2 matrimonial. The rooms are spacious, with wooden furniture and a unique and different interior design, and each has direct access to the yard of the Equestrian Club. So, those interested can learn to ride a horse from professionals in the field. Those who have been around have come back every time and said that prices are standard (around 40 euros/night), but the atmosphere is high class.

Probably as popular as the old town itself, Marginimea Sibiului is a must-see.

There are organized tours you can choose to explore the area, or, better yet, you can choose to have your whole stay here.   This being said, have you ever imagined checking-in at an apple orchard? Probably not, but we’re here to tell you that such a place really exists. Situated a few kilometers from Sibiu, in the lush area of Cisnadioara, on the edge of a forest, Apfelhaus Pension lies right in the middle of an…apple orchard. It offers 32accommodation places, divided into 15 rooms. The place has everything you need for an unforgettable stay – restaurant with German and Romanian specific, grill, playground for children, tennis and football field, jacuzzi, sauna, and on request,  you can take guided tours with experienced guides. Depending on the period you choose to stay here, the prices start at 30 euros/night.

Another great option for accommodation in the Marginimea Sibiului? Probably the most famous guesthouses of them all…Pension Mai. And if we think about it, it’s owners might be more famous than the pension itself. Everybody knows and loves Mary and Șoru, and many come here just to have a bite of the homemade delicacies made by Șoru himself! Of course, the environment is a visual bliss, as you have the Cindrel Mountains behind the guesthouse and the Stezii Valley alongside, so that might be another reason the pension is so popular. At Pension Mai there are 64 accommodation places in elegant rooms (31 single and double rooms & 1 apartment), with private bathroom, balcony, TV, telephone, minibar, wireless internet access, sauna access, outdoor swimming pool with heated water. And once you get passed all these “technical” details, let’s get to what you’ll love most: the food. You’ll find some international dishes, but really it’s the Romanian food you should focus on. Most of it is homemade, and the recipes are the old traditional ones, so you’ve gotta trust us, you can’t go wrong! Moreover, if you like to fish, you can do it here, and then the chefs will cook your own “capture”. The rates for accommodation start with 48 euros per night, with breakfast included, but for stays longer than 5 days this price may decrease.

By now, we’ve taken you through almost every part of Sibiu, and still, there is more! Sibiu is in a mountain area, so it would almost be a shame not to climb up to Paltinis, especially during wintertime.  Situated in the Cindrel Mountains, it’s a known fact that Paltinis is the highest mountain resort in Romania, with it’s 1440m altitude. No matter the season, there’s always something for you to try up here : ski, snowboard, adventure park. It will take you about 1 hour to get to Paltinis, maybe more during peak season. So if you want to really enjoy your activities, you might want to consider staying there for a night or two. A good option is Perla Paltinisului, a tourist complex that consists of two guesthouses and a restaurant. Out of the 2 guesthouses, the 4 daisy building is rather new, as it was completed in 2009. And the best part about staying at Perla Paltinisului? The price is only around 20 euros per night.

Well, there you have it. A looot of options! Most of them covering both the accommodation and eating out needs. To help you decide, you can take a look at the best restaurant in Sibiu.  You can choose your favourite, and if you make reservations using Travelscounter, you’ll get 10,15 or even 20% discount off your bills.

Happy holidays, see you at the Christmas Fair!

Candles, cards, decorations, snowball dippers, marshmallows, hot wine and all the goodies in the same place…. it means Christmas is coming!!!

“All is calm, all is bright” season is upon us!

Sibiu proudly dressed its celebration clothes and because a little sparkle never killed nobody, all the shiny glowing accessories and street lights are out to make it more spectacular – and trust us… they’re more elegant than ever. The cold evenings will be more brilliant, and at the city centre you won’t find a crowd, but rather a very big family meeting.

winter holidays

If this weekend Sibiu is on your list, you are soooo lucky because once you get here you will be brought into a fairytale world. The Big Square will be a rare paradise. These past days we could already notice the friendly wooden houses and the Christmas tree being installed. This is the first positive sign which makes us dream about the annual Christmas Fair. Holding on to a cup of mulled wine as a hand warmer, you can stroll through Sibiu’s main square and feel amazed of everything you see.

And because each year more and more tourists decide to visit the Christmas capital of Romania, the number of houses from which you can buy seasonal goods increases from 80 to 104. More houses, more shopping and many more happy souls! The absolute novelty of this edition of the Christmas Fair is the arrangement of a “market within the market” – a street-food area. You’ll get to taste traditional goodies, delicious drinks like the famous Almdudler, or hot cocktails. Of course, no one forgot about the wine! Crushbar is waiting for you at the Fair with lots of mulled wine.

11th edition and still counting

The Grand Opening of the Christmas Fair’s 11th edition takes place this Friday, November 17th. And we sure are excited!!! Since the first editions, the event has gained a very good name and became the only Romanian Christmas fair known abroad and attracting an increasing number of tourists each year. This edition brings together over 90 exhibitors from the country and abroad, the largest number so far, as well as numerous attractions for children. This year’s lighting concept is a special one also – a grand projection on all the buildings in the Big Square will make the centre of Sibiu probably the brightest spot in the country.

The festive inauguration of the Christmas Fair 2017 in Sibiu will be one with lights and music – as we have been accustomed to each year. This year, the famous pan-pipeist Radu Nechifor will warm up our evening with delicate music along with his band, and a very special gueozana barabanceast – Ozana Barabancea.

Together they will go through a vast repertoire, featuring holiday themes, which will create a lovely winter scene along with the stalls and the beautiful Christmas lights twinkling all around the Old Town. If you’re not here for the inaugural weekend, don’t worry! Tha Fair is open until January, so there’s plenty of time for you to enjoy it. You can even book a city-break package, if you want a tour guide showing you all the most interesting things around.

Immerse yourself in the true xmassy spirit with all the twinkling lights, festive music, gifts and treats. The story of Christmas is a story of love. So, share it with everyone you love at Sibiu’s Christmas Fair. It will be magical, spectacular and unforgettable.

And when you get tired or frozen and you wish you could be in a cozy, warm place, take a look at our list of all the best restaurants in Sibiu. Make reservations for any of them, and you get up to 20% discount to your bill!

May your days be merry and bright! See you at the Christmas Fair!

This beginning of November is very good to us, despite the cold weather, because Sibiu’s agenda is full again. From ballet to horror parties, all the evenings are filled with excitement. And we’re more than happy to tell you all about it!

Several ethnicities, the same festival

November 5th to 12th Sibiu welcomes again the Hungarian culture – the “Ars HUNGARICA” Festival. The organisers say that it is the event that presents and represents Hungarian heritage, traditions and culture in a multicultural way, by opening up to other ethnicities.

Tickets for the festival can be purchased from the HID Association – Sibiu Cultural Center (2, Berăriei Street, 2nd floor) until November 3rd at the price of 40 lei / person and 30 lei for students and retirees. For those under 18, the entrance is free of charge. The ticket guarantees entry and reservation of all venues in theatres. In the case of night concerts, the voucher provides the entrance, and reservations are made at the following telephone numbers: 0723.287486 – Atrium and 0752.195942 – Music Pub.

How to eat good and like a real gypsy

November 2nd to 5th, the “Gypsy Gastronomic Feast” takes place in the heart of Sibiu. The event is at its first edition and is organised by the International Romani Union – IRU Association in collaboration with the Sibiu City Hall. The festival allows us to find out as many fascinating things about the colourful cuisine of the Roma people. Tasting at the event is free. The organisers announce that during the whole period of the festival, 27 parking spaces in the Small Square will be restricted for the good management of this event.

One-man show at Gong

On Sunday, November 5th, at the “Gong” Theatre for Children and Youth, the “Eine kleine Nachtmusik” choreographic theatre performance comes to the stage once again, after it has been staged for the first time at this year’s edition of the “George Enescu” International Festival.  mozart

It starts at 19:00 and it is Lari Georgescu’s one-man show based on W.A. Mozart’s music and Gigi Căciuleanu’s lyrics, as well as upon a fragment of the original “Dell’arte” comedy script belonging to Mozart. We are talking about a bold and unprecedented approach, an insight into the world of Mozart’s genius. The show lasts for one hour and ten minutes and is recommended for young people over the age of 12. Public access is based on tickets. The price of a ticket is 9 lei, a single tariff, for tickets purchased at the theatre or at Humanitas bookstores. For tickets purchased online and in the Eventim network, a 10% commission is charged.

“Baiadera” – ballet and a nineteenth century story

Monday, November 6, at the “Radu Stanca” Theater, at 19:00, we invite you to “Baiadera”, a classic ballet act that has premiered last month in Sibiu

sibiu balletThe story of this show begins on February 4th 1877 at the Imperial Grand Theatre in St. Petersburg when its world premiere took place. It is a typical creation of that period that brings to the fore in India the conflicts of romantic ballet in which love, jealousy, intrigue, crime and revenge combine. After the show we can talk about ballet at the superlative.

Tickets can be purchased from the point of sale located in Piaţa Mare, within the Tourist Information Center, Sibiu City Hall, entrance F or online, at the same prices as at the point of sale, without any additional commission on kompostor.ro and bilet.ro.

Tickets can also be reserved for forty-eight hours online on the official TBS website or by phone 0269 229 627. But bare in mind that online and phone bookings, which are not confirmed by payment within forty-eight hours, are invalidated.

All about the guitar

The story of the guitar” is a music and theatre show that takes place at the Thalia Hall on Wednesday, November 8th at 19:00. We are talking about two hours of tribute to the guitar and to all the artists who have played this awesome instrument. At the same time, at 19:00 at Thalia Hall, there is also a chamber recital by soloists Cristian Florea (cello) and Mihai Ungureanu (piano), who will perform the Brahms Sonatas.

Marius Mihalache is back at Atrium

marius mihalache

Looking for a cool concert? Friday, 3 November 3rd, at 21:00, you can watch Marius Mihalache and his band in action, at Atrium. They’re going to take us back in time to the 1920’s and 40’s, the time of lively swing, frenzied dance and the stylish wear. The organisers say it’s a moody and improvised story on the band’s accords. An impossible proposal to refuse. The price of one ticket is 35 lei, and for reservations you can use our website, and you will get a 10% DISCOUNT to the final bill.

Who run the world?! Girls!

Swedish (hot) Dads
photo exhibitionA unique event takes place these days in Sibiu. The Embassy of Sweden brings the exhibition “Swedish Dads”. Its opening takes place today at 18:00 at the Astra Museum in Sibiu and it will be open to the public until November 5th, 2017. The exhibition tells the story of the fathers who, in Sweden, are increasingly choosing to go on a paternal leave and take care of raising their children. The photographs show how Swedish fathers perceive the role of the modern man, in contrast to the role of the traditional, paternal stereotype.  When Swedish photographer Johan Bävman became a father, he realised there was a lack of male models to represent a parent model. This led him to create a photo album called the Swedish Dads, which shows 20 Swedish fathers on paternal leave, along with their children.
The Swedish Dads exhibition is being premiered in Sibiu and aims to analyse the reasons why these fathers decided to stay home, taking care of children, more than most fathers around the whole world.
What did this mean to them, how their relationships and their children were affected, and what expectations did they have in advance? Questions that might find their answer in the photos exhibited.
INFOS For book-lovers
For those who love reading, especially specialty reading, we present the Health Book Fair “AlterNativ”. The event starts this Friday, at 10:00, at the Astra library. Potato week
In the most special setting, the Brukenthal Palace of Avrig, between the 14th and 22nd  of October, gastronomy lovers are invited to the “Potato Week”. The star of this event is the tasty potato, and the feast of this vegetable will culminate on October 21st with a gala where the special guest will be the one and only Corina Chiriac. The organisers promise a potato menu, complex and full of originality and creativity.  The story of this event is not a coincidence. Apparently, more than 200 years ago, the first potatoes in Transylvania were planted at Baron Samuel von Brukenthal’s yard. He introduced Avrig to potato cultivation, aiming to improve the everyday life of the people.
You can find out more about this event on their Facebook page. It sounds very promising, so you might want to give it a go.

The sun is still warming our days and that makes us all very happy! And we’re even more happy to talk about more awesome days in Sibiu.

And we say this because Sibiu continues to be governed by quality events. We are one step away from one of the biggest documentary film festivals – Astra Film Festival- we also have a festival dedicated to handmade goods and one about the Gypsies’ tradition.

There is also color, good vibes and diversity this week. If you are in the old town, don’t miss the goodies from local producers. During the “green Friday”, taking place each Friday between 8:00 and 14:00, local producers from the villages of Sibiu County come to sell their organic products in the courtyard of the Evangelical Church in Huet Square. You will find a wide range of baked products, preserved products, cheeses, sausages, organic fruits and vegetables. Trust us…you can’t compare these products with anything! They’re just awesome!

Oh, and if the days are busy, so are the nights. And we’re offering a cool tool where you can see over 40 of the most awesome locations in Sibiu, all in one place. Check out the best restaurants and locations in Sibiu, and you’ll have plenty of ideas for how to spend a cozy and chilly autumn evening. lorena lupuAt Atrium Classic Caffe, for example, you can attend a book launch this Friday at 18:30. “Trollywood” by Lorena Lupu is a collection of the best texts on the blog that has made us laugh for the last ten years! Entrance to the event is free and if you make reservations using the BOOK&SAVE button on Travelscounter, you’ll get an awesome 10% discount to your bill!

Where to find the coolest souvenirs

The ideal places to choose souvenirs are those where handmade products are found. Well, this week Sibiu has a whole festival dedicated to handmade craftmanship – “Creative Buzz”. There are 3 days, October 13th to 15th, where you can enjoy homemade pastries and choose the products made by the best craftsmen. There’s also great music, and the little ones can have fun thanks to the countless activities created especially for them.handmade

There will be more than 35 exhibitors and the range of products is diversified. From decoration objects to jewellery, accessories, painted crafts, unique toys, natural cosmetics, homemade jams and many more.

The organizers also announce a prize raffle for all those who buy products during the 3 days of festival. So, feel free to stop by the German Forum of Sibiu, betweeen 10:00 to 20:00, and choose your souvenirs!

For the love of classics

jean mullerWe recommend Goldberg Variations, a piano concert offered by the Embassy of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg in Romania, in collaboration with the Luxembourg Ministry of Culture, the Honorary Consulate of Luxembourg in Sibiu and the Philharmonic State of Sibiu, with the support of the City Hall of Sibiu.

It sounds wonderful, right? First of all it’s good to know that at this concert the entrance is free. All you have to do is to book a seat today at athenes.amb@mae.etat.lu or directly at the Thalia Hall at the ticket office. You’d best hurry!

The concert will take place this Friday, October 13th, from 19:00, at the Thalia Hall, and you’ll get to see Luxembourgian pianist Jean Muller on stage. The concert will be followed by a reception where the audience is invited to taste a fine wine from Luxembourg.

Poetic Gypsies

Also this week is the second edition of the International Festival “Romaii Poesia”. This is an event dedicated to the gypsy poets from Romania and other countries, as well as the facilitation of an intercultural dialogue by promoting the customs and traditions of the Gypsy community.gypsies

Everything about documentation

And we’re ending this article with a big heads-up to one of fall’s most anticipated events : the Astra Film Festival. It takes place in Sibiu only next week, during 16 – 22 October. But it is one of the most important documentary festivals in Europe, so we thought you might want to know a bit more about it. The organizers actually say it is unique in South East Europe.

The movies which will be broadcast during the festival bring contemporary human realities under the spotlight, and this encourages documentaries to provide detailed and intimate descriptions of the human condition. The films are both Romanian and international and you will find something to fit each taste.

The first edition of the festival was in 1993, so we can talk about a mature festival. The program and all the information about the festival can be found here

Take advantage of the breaks between documentaries and the best venues in Sibiu. You can choose your favorite place, and go talk about the movies you watched while you taste some awesome food.

There you have it, another perfectly planned end of the week. 😉

Enjoy!

A few days ago we officially entered astronomical autumn. With the autumn equinox the days are shorter and the nights longer. Slowly, the cold weather is also installed, so it is good to have some warm clothing with you at all times. Don’t avoid going out into nature! Autumn is the best painter and you have our word that you do not want to miss the colors and the landscape that this season offers in Sibiu. Sibiu remains a lively city in the coming days, and we’re here to tell you what events you shouldn’t miss this autumn, and which are the best venues you could spend your time in!

It’s about “All That’s Wonderful in the World.” These two are the last outdoor shows of this season. For the romantic and nostalgic ones, we recommend “La Cenerentola – Gioachino Rossini” (Cinderella), a two-act opera, after a libretto by Jacopbruncho Ferreti inspired by the classic fairy tale of our childhood. The show takes place this Saturday at 19:00 at the Sibiu State Philharmonic. And Sunday, again at the Philharmonic, at 11:00 and 17:00 you can watch “Goe and his folks” a musical by Roman Vlad and Stela Popescu. A good opportunity to take advantage of carefully selected Transylvanian dishes! And there’s more to this event : you can see a painting exhibition and you can attend the recital of Hakon Kornstadt, within the fortified church of Cincsor. Places at this brunch are limited, and the ticket price is 75 lei. Make sure you book your spot here

Also this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, in the ASTRA Traditional Folk Civilization Museum, bow arrowa 3D ArcheryNational Contest takes place. It is the first competition of its kind in Sibiu and will take place on a special course put together by the organizers. So far, there are 104 participants! Surely we will have what to see. Participants will shoot from a distance of 5 to 50 meters at different angles, and there will be naturallyRomanian food sized targets. Interestingly, visitors can see close competition and even interact with participants while moving from one target to another. In complete safety, guaranteed by the organizers, they will be able to admire the skills of the archers, the variety of arches, starting from the historical replicas and ending with the last generation, capable of the highest precision. And if all this hunting will get you hungry, it’s good to know that you can stop by for some 5 stars romanian food, on your way back to the city. Give Hilton’s Camara Boierului a try, if you want to taste pure goodness, with a 10% discount off your bill!

Motivation to hit the gym

fitness championship

And as we can’t have a week without a sport, it’s good to know that on the 29th and 30th of September Sibiu hosts the National Bodybuilding and Fitness Championship 2017 finals. Friday is for training sessions and putting together last details, and the competition itself starts Saturday, at 11:00. If you love science

Autumn comes with a whole night dedicated to scientists and technology lovers. This is the “Night of Researchers” event, organized by “Lucian Blaga” University. The country’s most important male tennis tournament

For a few days now, we’ve been enjoying Sibiu Open 2017 – the most important male tennis tournament and the only ATP Challenger tournament in Romania. Couldn’t leave this out of our guide! It started Saturday, September 16th and it will end on September 24th. There have already been some interesting days, with the first results coming in, and with the First Lady making an appearance. And for sure the best is yet to come, if you consider that 13 US Open participants are at this year’s Sibiu Open also!tennis

It’s definitely something you could try, as it is an exciting and relaxing option at the same time. Tennis is also called the “white sport”. The name comes, on the one hand, from the equipment of the players which were completely white in the past, and on the other hand it is a clean competition, without cheating and with respectable players, being considered one of the most beautiful sports in the world. Take a look at the next days’ schedule, and take your pick.

A festival and a musical journey over time

sibiu Saturday, September 23rd and Sunday, September 24th, you can find yourself in the midst of the youngest music festival in Sibiu.
The first edition of the “Street Music Festival” takes place in the Small Square, and the special guests are the “Budapest Ragtime Band”, which the organizers say is one of Europe’s most beloved entertainment bands.
Public access to this event is free of charge.
This year’s edition is all about “RAGTIME” – the style of optimistic and engaging music that has caused a stir between 1895 and 1918. The style was chosen for this first edition in the context of this year’s celebration of Scott Joplin, “The King of Ragtime,” who passed away 100 years ago. So if you love traveling in time, “Street Music Festival” gives you this opportunity.

For Comic Books Lovers

comic stripAnd if you happen to be in the Small Square between September 22nd and 24th, you should check out the Hermes House. Dancesport, ballet, guitar, books and…muscles are the proposals for how you can spend your free time in Sibiu this weekend. All in all, I have to tell you that from Friday to Sunday we will enjoy great weather. The Institute of Meteorology has reported that we’re going to have plenty of sunshine, with temperatures from 29 to 31 degrees, and the wind will blow lightly, just enough to make the heat bearable.

So, take advantage of the stray summer during these autumn days and check out the best venues in Sibiu. You have a wide range of choices, both in the middle of Sibiu and beyond, in locations surrounded by idyllic landscapes, clean air and adventure.

Books make you richer.

First on our list of events is the Sibiu Book Festival – Open Minds, a – you guessed it – book festival. We welcome the idea of such an event especially when you think that we live in a world where technology has the bad habit of resibiu free timeplacing the interest for books and reading. And “a bookless room is like a soulless body” Cicero once said. Sibiu Book Festival is a relaxing festival, perfect for your free time, that combines the pleasure of reading with quality music as it perfectly fades into the weekend. It takes place between September 14th and 17th , in the Small Square. There will be many books, new titles, special offers, and a collection and donation campaign.

Did you know, for example, that the smallest book in the world has 0.9 mm both in length and in height, like a grain of salt, but it has 30 pages, out of which 3 are coloured? Or that the Bible is the world’s best-selling book, that Shakespeare invented over 17,000 words and that Essenza Wine & Books in Sibiu is a place like no other where you can combine good wine with jazz and old books? You can make reservations for wine tastings and events using the Essenza Wine&Books page. And the best part…you’ll have 10% discount off the bill!

How to lift a bus and be seen by people in 89 countries.

Saturday, September the 16th, between 14:30 and 20:00, the world’s most powerful people meet in the Big Square. “Strongman Champions League Romania” will create a part of Goliath’s world in Sibiu. There will be buses drawn by people, huge wheels and stones and nine athletes will compete over their muscles. It is a “power lifting” competition set up in 2008 following the “World’s Strongest Man” circuit.

Participants are the world’s best athletes who face over 20 contest stages, based on strength, skills and resistance. Sibiu hosts 5 of them, and the rest are taking place elsewhere in the world. At the end of the competition the most powerful man on the planet is chosen. Sounds…heavy, right? The event has global coverage being transmitted by the Eurosport Channel within a 52-minute show to be broadcast in 89 countries.

dancesportDance the weekend away.

This Friday and Saturday the secrets of dancesport are uncovered in Sibiu. The Transylvanian Grand Prix 2017takes place at the Transylvania Hall. If we are to believe the organisers, it is the most important dance event in Romania. Every year, there are over 2,000 athletes from all over the world, and over 20 World Ranking Pairs have confirmed that they will be at Sibiu. The competition is intended for amateur athletes participating in World Open Standard and World Open Latino, and it is structured on age groups. Tickets for this event can be purchased on kompostor.ro But beware! If you decide to go, you will definitely want to go out dancing.

And there’s no better place for that than the ultra glamorous Liquid the Club. As always, Saturday night comes with special events, and there’s no exception this weekend! Celebrity Daniela Crudu and the cool Silviu Andrei DJ are in the house this Saturday at Liquid! Make reservations for this (or any other) party using the Liquid the Club page, and you’ll get 15% discount off the bill! Cheers to that!

Food. Awesome food. Street food.

The best part of this coming weekend? An event we’ve been very much waiting for – “Foodie – Street Food Cuisine”, the awesomest culinary festival. The organisers want to take out the culinary art outside the restaurants’ kitchens, to take it to Cetatii Street – the most beautiful street in Sibiu – and to offer three really memorable days! There’s also very good music in store for us, with the help of “The Noise”, “Les Elephants Bizarres”, “Omelette”, “GOLAN”, “Yellow” and “Sarmalele Reci”. Some of the best street food is just waiting for all of us to sample it. We’re talking grilled goodies, burgers, paella, waffles, ice-cream, all that’s good in this world 😉 And we could tell you a lot about this event, but wouldn’t you rather see it for yourself?

street food sibiu

Especially when it takes place on one of the most interesting areas of Sibiu, near the third fortification belt, built between 1357-1366. The three towers of the guilds, the Gunsmiths Tower, the Carpenters Tower and the Potters Tower were built in the 14th-15th centuries, and the way they have preserved their appearance over thousands of years is remarkable. So make sure you get to see them this weekend!

A more delicate touch.

We could not finish the list of events without recommending the opening of the Sibiu Opera Festival. The event marks the start of the 2017-2018 season of the Sibiu Ballet Theatre and takes place on September 15th at 19:00 at the Thalia Hall. The show opening the season is “Peer Gynt”, a contemporary dance choreographed by Aleisha Gardner, on the live music of musicians Monica Florescu – Fernandez and Makcim Fernandez Samodaiev. The show is extremely popular, so maybe you will take advantage of your free time and attend it. You can buy tickets from the ticket offices of the State Philharmonic of Sibiu and kompostor.ro.

That being said, we look forward to a weekend with great food, books, and dancing. Hope you have a great one!

Spoiler alert! WE HAVE AN OLDIES-BUT-GOLDIES weekend ahead!
By now we’re sure you’ve figured out that Sibiu weekends are always filled with amazing concerts and events, and there is no rest for the curious ones while in Sibiu! This weekend is no exception, either!

concert

Already at its 4th edition, Sibiul de Odinioara promotes all there was good about times past: good oldies-but-goldies music, old-school games and entertainment, traditional food, ice-cold beer and spritzers, and much more! For two days -19th and 20th August, between 10:00 and 20:00 – the old camping area of the Dumbrava Forest is once again home to one of the summer’s most anticipated events.
As always, Sibiul de Odinioara aims to bring to the stage a part of the Romanian music’s golden age artists.
The first day of this year’s event is dedicated to old-school rock. Starting with 18:00, we’ll get to enjoy the concerts of the well-known Timpuri Noi, Antract, and Talisman. Young rock will also get its chance, and so, opening for the famous bands we’ll get to see two local rock bands: Onenightstand and Wild Child. 2017 lineup
Sunday is folk day at Sibiul de Odinioara! It’s actually the first edition where a whole day is dedicated entirely to this music genre. Mircea Baniciu, Mircea Vintilă, Vasile Șeicaru and Victor Socaciu will make the atmosphere and evening unforgettable, with hit songs everybody knows and loves.
But wait a minukids funte, the 4th edition of Sibiul de Odinioară isn’t just about top concerts. Parents must bring their children to this event because the organizers have many surprises for the little ones. As a first, this year a mini amusement park with many attractions is arranged on a generous surface so that the children can fully enjoy their day out. Slides, baby jumping mattresses, pools with huge balls, and these are just a few of them. Children can also have fun joining the creativity workshops: fun activities and sports competitions coordinated by those from Serious Fun are sure to keep them entertained! But don’t think fun things are planned only for the little ones! In the Fun Zone, everyone can have fun regardless of their age, as they’ll be put in some funny situations. Grandparents will clean onions, dads will carry potatoes around in a wheelbarrow and mothers will show their talents as good housewives while washing shirts with home-made soap. Just like the old days! grill food
And because with so many activities you’re bound to get hungry, there’s a whole food zone ready to cater to those with empty stomachs. Of course, grilled goodies are on the menu, along with other traditional dishes. And of course, there will be a “flood” of ice-cold beer!
Make sure you stop by – the entrance is free at this event, and it’s impossible to get bored here!

Looking to prolong your good vibe?!

At Mai Losibiu rally challengeunge everything is possible.
This cool venue hosts the official Afterparty of Romania Rally Challenge! After 2 days of competition on some of Sibiu’s most beautiful roads, the 70 crews will gather at Mai Lounge to celebrate yet another successful event. Join them if you love both sports and good music. It can be one of your memorable, epic nights! Don’t miss it! Be there on Saturday, August the 19th from 23:00. As per usual, summer weekends are well spent in Sibiu! And this coming weekend is no exception! In fact, it just might be one of the busiest yet! Here, we’re lining up all the cool and must-attend events of this weekend.

First up, it’s the meeting of the Saxons. The biggest of the last 27 years.

It is truly going to be big, as over 12,000 people have confirmed they will be attending this event. Even the country’s current president, and Sibiu’s former beloved mayor, Mr. Klaus Johannis, is going to be present!

The whole center of Sibiu, from the Huet Square to the Big Square and the Citadel Street, will be filled with events, stalls and cultural demonstrations.

It is an important event, as it aims to remind Germany and Austria living Saxons, of their roots: Sibiu and Transylvania.

During this event, you’ll get to see traditional dances and customs parades, brass bands or folk music concerts, culinary demonstrations. And another thing you’ll find for sure: beer. Plenty of it!

sachsentreffen 2017

The meeting will turn the old town of Sibiu into an effervescent cultural space, which will surely attract (almost) all the attention.

The 27th edition has quite a full program. Which you’ll be able to check out at any of the info stands in the Big Square, or at this link. Out of all the interesting things on this year’s agenda, we’re also excited about the two representations of “Faust”, on the 4th and 5th of August, at 19:00, at the Cultural Factory.

Another cool event taking place this weekend is Arini Fest.

As always, Arini Fest is another way to spend amazing time with your friends, going out in nature at the Sub Arini Park. Between the 4th and 6th of August, the public is invited to a new series of events and creative activities in the middle of nature. Outdoor movie screenings, live music sessions supported by DJ CampSauvage, children’s games and workshops are part of the Arini Fest program this year. The audience is also encouraged to organize picnic sessions in the spaces allowing the placement of blankets, chairs and much more.

tim burton

This year, Arini Fest invites you to enter the fascinating world of Tim Burton, and as such the movies you’ll be able to see this weekend are :

– Friday the 4th, at 22:00 – Big Eyes (USA, Biography / Drama, 105 ‘with Amy Adams, Christoph Waltz).

– Saturday, the 5th, at 22:00 – Alice in Wonderland (USA, Adventures, 110 ‘with Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter).

– Sunday, the 6th, at 22:00 – Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (USA, adventures / fantastic, 127 ‘with Samuel L.Jackson, Judi Dench, Eva Green.)

Because a literally incendiary weekend is announced in Sibiu, with temperatures reaching 36 degrees Celsius, you might want to know that Sibiu hosts an event sure to help you cool down!

The Astra Museum is home to the BEER Craft @ Art event.

The first Transylvanian event which promotes Romanian beer craftsmanship. So between the 4th and 6th of August, pay the Astra Village MuseuSibiu Astra Museumm a visit to meet the 14 beer craftsmen and 2 cider craftsmen. You’ll get to sample craft beer, cider, and natural juices, along with some very tasty traditional dishes.

And while most of the action seems to be happening outside this weekend, there’s fun to be had indoors also! Go clubbing at the most glamorous club in Sibiu – Liquid the Club!

Liquid the Club hosts amazing parties every Saturday night, for all those looking to party until dawn.

You can book your table for Liquid the Club using Travelscounter, and you’ll have an awesome 15% discLiquid The Club | Sibiu Travelscounterount off the bill!

With so many great things happening this weekend, you’re bound to have a great one! So enjoy!

LOOKING FOR A COOL ACTIVITY FOR YOU KID?

The Brukenthal Palace of Avrig hosts the Plant Zoom summer camp during the first three days of August. Camp at the palace… it sounds kinda grbrukenthal palaceeat, right? Organized by the Transylvania Project Association, together with the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine in Cluj Napoca, the summer camp hosts children and teenagers who are interested in learning more about micro flora and micro fauna in the Brukenthal garden, about the Tulip Tree, the Dutch garden, The English garden and the French garden, about the history of the orangery.
The event takes place between 1-3 August. During these three days, the kids will get the chance to identify the microflora and fauna of the Brukenthal Palace’s garden, take part in practical activities, and attend discussions about genetically modified organisms. Children will get acquainted with rare plants like the 250-year-old tulip trees in Brukenthal’s gbrukenthal palacearden. The tulip tree or Tulipan is a tree originating in the forests of North America and grows so rarely in Europe. In fact, only a few are left in Europe, and the ones in Sibiu are the oldest in the country, thought to have been brought here by Samuel von Brukenthal himself. They are a marvellous sight, as each of the tulip trees in the baron’s garden is over 30 meters high, with trunks so thick they can be held only be 4 or 5 people at a time. Now, these are some really big trees!
The rest of the garden is also absolutely miraculous… Rare plants with a rare beauty, cared for with the greatest love … you can enjoy it too if you choose to go to this camp!
You can book your kid’s spot at the summer camp by calling  0269.523.111 at the Summer Palace reception or directly on the Brukenthal Palace’s Facebook page. The price is 100 ron and it includes one lunch. You can also camp here with a tent. Great memories can be made in tents…so don’t miss this opportunity.
And don’t forget, you can book a table for lunch or dinner using Travelscounter. You will have reserved seats and 20% off your bill! orangery
Pay less, smile more, and enjoy your weekend!

Beautiful. Ceramic. Useful. Saschiz ceramics

Since ancient times, on Romanian territory natives have worked with soft clay they have modeled in every possible way. That’s why in any Romanian museum you’ll find clay statues, vessels, and household objects dating hundreds and thousands of years back! This craftsmanship has been transmitted from generation to generation. Moreover, in Sibiu, there is an event dedicated 100% to pottery, and it takes place (you guessed!) at the Astra Open Air Museum.

astra museum

This event takes place every year in the middle of July, and this year it’s on July 19th to 23rd. The project has been going on for some years now, under the motto “Beautiful. Ceramic. Useful”, and the organizers define it as “A different kind of potter’s fair”.

This year, the main attraction is the pottery of Saschiz, a village in Transylvania with centuries of tradition in pottery. During three days, potters from Romania, Hungary, and Bulgaria are competing both at the potter’s wheel and at cooking traditional recipes in clay vessels.

sibiu pottery

Another goal of this whole event, as the organizers have stated, is to seek a way to adapt production and ornamentation methods to international requirements, by gradually replacing lead varnishes with more eco-friendly glazes for household ceramics household, while at the same time keeping the character, typology, and style. Visitors of the Open Air Museum in Dumbrava Sibiu are invited to participate in demonstrations of pottery and cooking or buy beautiful, well-fired pots, in which the food retains its full natural taste.

astra museum food

What’s really interesting is that every visitor or curious can learn how to make a clay pot. You can mold the clay on the potter’s wheel, press clay in patterns, or decorate ceramic pots under the guidance of craftsmen.

The highlight? Culinary demonstrations are organized at the Country Fair in the Outdoor Museum, starting this Friday at 9:30 until Sunday. Potters and chefs will cook in earthen vessels on the open fireplace or in the oven, traditional Bulgarian recipes, Swäbische, Hungarian and Romanian as well: salted cheese Bulgarian pie (Banitsa), potato pudding (Patatnik),Swäbische Krumpir – Suppe mit Eier , sour or sweet cabbage meat rolls, goat soup, vegetables stew, Hungarian goulash, potato and Csabai sausage soup, and many more delish dishes. The Hungarians in Sibiu Association are also organizing a tasting of cabbage soup (Toros káposztaleves) and Palóc goulash (Palócgulyás) on Saturday an Sunday.

goulash

It’s another fun way to spend your summer days, and you should definetly give it a try. And since you’re in Sibiu, if you’re looking for scoops on where to go and what to eat, you can also check-out Travelscounter. We’ve got all the best restaurants, coffee-shops, pubs and clubs in Sibiu, and we’re giving you awesome discounts to use in all of them! Enjoy!

TRAVELSCOUNTER: We understand the 10th edition is preparing a special program?
MITICHI: Every edition is special, but this edition is an important anniversary for us. We worked nights and days, and we’re still working to polish everything. Feeric Fashion Week reopens gates to fashion photography through two exhibitions to be held during the festival.
We have many spectacular surprises … you will see them all.

If you’re a crazy guitarist, this festival is dedicated to you!

sibiu guitar meetingSibiu Guitar Meeting 2017takes place this weekend –  July 14th to 16th.
This event is coming into a new phase of development this year. The third edition of the Sibiu Guitar Meeting will, in fact, be an international festival that will last for three days. This year brings more than 400 musicians from France, Italy, Germany, the Republic of Moldova and Hungary. The artists are going to play 15 hit songs this year, of which 9 will be rock or folk Romanian songs.

2 days of the festival, 2 days of happiness!

If you thought Sibiu is getting quiet, well…think again!

It’s that time of the year again, when movie lovers from all over the country and the world can enjoy 5 dreamy days in Sibiu, 5 days of TIFF – Transilvania International Film Festival. tiff sibiu

Started in 2002, TIFF is the first international feature film festival in Romania. During these years, TIFF has become a well-known brand in Romania, not only due to the outstanding films screened every year, but also for the effective organization, sparkling atmosphere and density of events, from seminars, workshops and panels to fabulous concerts and crazy all night long parties.

For 5 days, movie lovers will get to enjoy a selection of over 40 titles. It’s the 11th edition, and the programme sounds really promising, as always! There will be projections taking place in 4 permanent locations – The Big Square, The Gong Theatre, The Astra Film Hall in the Small Square and The Thalia Hall. And there will also be 3 special events, in 3 special locations – the Brukenthal Palace of Avrig, the Gura Raului Dam, and the lake stage of The Astra Museum, in the Dumbrava Forest.

We sure know what we’re going to do June 21st to 25th ! And if you’re not already here, you still have time to make it to Sibiu!

TIFF Sibiu 2017 launches it’s 11th edition this Wednesday night, at 10 pm, with a screening of the much-awarded “Que Dios nos perdone” directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen. The screening is happening in the Big Square, on the enormous screen installed especially for the festival. It’s a special screening, as “Que Dios nos perdone” was nominated for 6 cathegories at the Goya Awards, while Robert Alamo – the leading man – was awarded the Goya Award for Best Actor. The thriller focuses on the inspectors Velarde and Alfaro, who are trying to solve a series of murders before the Pope’s arrival in Madrid. tiff program

The first day brings 3 movies at the Gong Theatre – Rasmus Heisterberg’s “In the Blood”, Iulia Rugina’s “Breaking News” with Andi Vasluianu in the leading role, and Ulrich Seidl’s controversial “Safari”, a documentary about austrian tourists who spend their summers in Africa, killing animals. The Astra Film Hall is also going to be busy for the first day. You can see “The Rolling Stones Olé, Olé, Olé!”, a documentary about the famous’ band tour in Latin America, “Siska Deluxe” directed by Jan Cvitkovic, or “Chavela” a portrait of the famous Mexican singer Chavela Vargas, freshly arrived from the Berlinale.

If you’re looking for special screenings, then you’re in for a treat! Because this year screening will be taking place in a new location, also – the amazing Brukenthal Palace of Avrig. Friday, the 23rd at 10 pm, you’re all invited to the Bel Etage, the area at the main entrance of the Summer Palace. You’ll get to see a great comedy, already viewed by more than 4.5 million frenchmen.”R.A.I.D Dingue” is directed by the famous Dany Boone, and tells the tale of the first woman ever accepted in the elite R.A.I.D squad, as she faces a very difficult mission – handling her ultra misoginistic partner while at the same time trying to stop a mob group.tiff program 2

And if you like to laugh, Saturday you can do it again, this time at the Gura Raului Dam. “Cabbage, Potatoes and other Demons”, or, funnier, “Varza, cartofi si alti demoni” is Serban Georgescu’s most recent pride and joy. Awarded with the Best Documentary title at the 2017 UCIN, it centers around the village of Lunguletu – a village with 1000 tractors and 100.000 tons of potatoes and cabbage, with which the villagers have no clue what to do. The screening begins at 9:45 pm, but it’s preceeded at 6 pm by a lovely picnic. This way, viewers will get to enjoy the area’s fresh air, and localy produced delicacies, while at the same time grooving to the jams of DJ Coralie de Gonzaga.

The last of this year’s special projections will take place on the lake stage of the Astra Village Museum. Sunday, at 10 pm, you’ll get to see Peter Brosens’s “King of the Belgians” – a story about a stranded king, trying to get back home from Istanbul, to deal with it’s country’s crisis.

Of course, the festival has a very rich agenda, too rich for us to encompass in one single article.

But keep in mind that there will be daily projections happening in the Big Square, at 10 pm, and entrance is free for all of them. The Gong Theatre will hold 3 projections daily, at 6, 8 and 10 pm, while at the Astra Film Hall the screenings will be held at 5:30, 7:30 and 9:30 pm each day. A new addition to TIFF’s locations, the Thalia Hall will hold 2 screenings a day, at 5:30 and 8:15 pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday. And it’s Friday, Saturday and Sunday that the little ones will get to enjoy their own film festival! The EducaTIFF project comes with special screenings for children, for which entrance is free, at the Astra Film Hall, each day at 11 am.  Tickets for this year’s edition can be purchased from the Big Square InfoPoint, open daily between 10 am and 10 pm, and from all of the projection locations.

And because 5 days is a long time to be in Sibiu, you’ll have plenty of time to try some of the cool restaurants and locations featured on Travelscounter Venues. You can make reservations for any of them, and you get 10,15 or even 20% discount off your bill!

So, we’ll see you at TIFF! Make sure to go ahead and make some nice memories in Sibiu!

This year FITS brought the summer, and FITS brought the love!

This year, love drew people to Sibiu.

fits sibiu 2017
Let’s see what are some of the most interesting shows FITS is preparing for this closing weekend!

The first day of the weekend starts fresh in the morning, at 8 o’clock on the outside wall of TNRS. This show is called “The horizontal newspaper” Vol. 5. It will be hosted by Dan Perjovschi & CO. Dan Perjovscji is a local artist and he created drawings in museum spaces ( most recently the Museum of Modern Art in N.Y.C. ). Be there and meet this talentated visual artist!

Starting with 9 am, the Gong Theatre will host a photo exhibition, called “Attitudes”.

At the same time, but in another venue – the “Imparatul Romanilor” Hotel – you’ll be able to admire the Romanian Folk Masks exhibition. And if you want a breath of “fresh” air you can go to a workshop – “Simplicity is very sofisticated”.

In fact, if you are a workshop lover this day is definetly for you! You can go to a workshop at the Students Culture House in the Orange Hall starting with 10 am – ” Acting Outside the Box: The actor as a Co-Creator”.

Later on, starting with 4 pm, at the Gong Theatre you can see “Do you speak emoji?” , a theatre performance by Gigi Caciuleanu. Movie lovers can go to Habitus, to see “The Phantom Father” (2011). And at the same time, at Cavas-ULBS you can enjoy a great theatre piece – “Three Legs”.

At about 6 pm it’s starting to get “crowded”, and you just have to choose your favorite show:

1)Gong Theatre – All over your face – Theatre piece. The ticket price is 30-25 lei.

2) Radu Stanca National Theatre – Brodsky/Bayshnikov scenete. Ticket price is 40 lei.brodsky-baryshnikov-SIBIU INTERNATIONAL THEATRE FESTIVAL 2017

3)Evangelic Churh to change the vibe and hear some beautiful music – Jangada de Pedra. Price 20 lei.

4) At the Sinagogue- Lux Aeterna – price 20 lei.

Starting with 9:30 pm it’s time for some theatre! You can enjoy “Metamorphoses”, “Deambuloscopy”, “MEDE/EA” or “About domestic happiness”.

Saturday is even busier! In the morning, it’s time for exhibitions and workshops. But as the day unfolds, theatre and circus take over the programme.

At 4 pm, you’re again invited to Habitus, as you wouldn’t want to miss an outstanding picture – Toni Erdmann (2016) .

By 5 pm, music takes over, and you can choose to enjoy some Fado at the Saint Joan Evangelical Church, or a street show right on Nicolae Balcescu – “Youth, Rhythm and Harmony”.

The evening continues with theatre, circus and dance. And because the closing weekend should really be special, you probably shouldn’t miss another representation of “Faust”, at 10 pm.

The last day might be a bit sad… but it promises to be the best day!

sibiu fits 2017Spectacular circus demonstrations will leave the audience dazzled.

And if you love dancing, Spanish sensations and flamenco, don’t miss the show 8 pm show – Andalusian Flamenco Ballet. This is going to be just warm-up, as at 10:15 pm it’s time for the highlight of the entire day. Be ready to dance and feel the rhythm with Kadebostany!

Kadebostany is a band from Geneva. It was founded in 2008 in what they call the “European republic of Kadebostan”. The band has a very unique visual stylistic identity and its powerful live performances and music videos (by SuperMafia) reflect that. It’s a unique opportunity to have fun dancing to their music and to listen to exceptional songs.

Of course a special fireworks show will close the day and the festival. At 11:45 pm be prepared to see Sibiu shining bright like a diamond!

We’re sure you loved Sibiu and FITS, so start getting ready for #fits2018 ! And when you come back to Sibiu, don’t forget to use Travelscounter to see the best restaurants and locations in the city! See you next time!

The recipe for an unforgettable day is for sure Brukenthal Palace AVRIG.
brukenthal palace AvrigThe decor and the summer garden of the palace are like a fairytale kingdom, full of trees and flowers, especially tulip trees.  There are only a few places in our country where the tulip trees grow, and the Brukenthal Palace of Avrig is one of those places. The tulip trees  are one of the attractions of the summer residence of Baron Samuel von Brukenthal.  At this time of the year, they bloom, giving the visitors an unforgettable view. The tulip tree found at Brukenthal Palace is about 250 years old, and it still has the power and vigor to offer an amazing spectacle for the eyes and souls of those who prefer to take a stroll in the middle of nature, on the alleys of the park, where the yellow tulips are shining, like precious stones. brukenthal palace
The tulip tree is declared a monument of nature, and there are only a few of them all over Europe. The origins of the tree are the forests from the east of North America. If you are looking forward to see the incredible garden, you can go to Brukenthal Palace.
You can also spend wonderful moments in the Orangery restaurant.
The Orangery serves international dishes as well as traditional Transylvanian dishes. Ingredients used in the preparation of dishes are purchased from local producers, who respect the true values: traditional cultivation, quality and taste. You will enjoy not only the dishes prepared with great attention, but you will also enjoy the romantic atmosphere of the restaurant, whose panoramic windows will reveal a unique view of the baroque garden.
Starting from spring to autumn, you can enjoy the culinary offer under the clear sky and in the shadow of the old trees. brukenthal palace meniuDepending on the season, blooming roses, lavender, dahlias and many other flowers will delight your senses. During the afternoon you can relax in a pleasant ambience and atmosphere, sipping a coffee or tasting cakes, tarts or a hot apple pie. Cakes are prepared with seasonal fruits: apples, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries and plums.  You can also try organic products such as sweets or syrups.
Aside from all these specialties, we recommend you try the seasonal menu based on asparagus. Asparagus is very delicious, both self-serving with sauce and as an ingredient in other foods such as soups, pasta, risotto, fish and seafood dishes. The palace kitchen can offer you asparagus cream soup, salad with pesto and asparagus, shrimp tiger fried with pesto and risotto with asparagus, chicken breast, pork or beef tenderloin, beef entrecote, salmon, all served with Hollandaise asparagus sauce and natural potatoes with butter and parsley.
And what’s best is that if you make a reservation for the Brukenthal Palace using Travelscounter, you will have a 20% discount on your bill. Now isn’t that lovely? Enjoy!

Just hours to go until the 24th edition of the Sibiu International Theatre Festival (FITS).

Although it no longer needs any presentation, Sibiu International Theatre Festival is the most important theatre and performing arts festival in Romania and sustains a creative dialogue at a European and international level. The 24th edition of the Sibiu International Theatre Festival is starting in just a few hours, and it will take over the entire city between 9-18 June 2017.

fits 2017

“Love” is the main theme of this year’s edition, according to festival’s director, Mr. Constantin Chiriac, who declared : “This universal force is love. Love is light, love is gravity, because it makes people feel attracted to each other. Love is power and gives humanity the chance not to perish in its own blind selfishness. For love we live and die. Love is God and God is love. This force explains everything and gives meaning to life. Love is the most powerful force that exists. It is imperative to feed on this form of energy that is love, to save the world and find the meaning of life. We are still not ready to create a bomb of love, to remove hatred and selfishness that devastates the planet. The theme of love is the theme that governs this edition of the festival. And in this spirit, at every meeting I will recite a poem about love.”SIBIU INTERNATIONAL THEATRE FESTIVAL 2017 (FITS)

Theatre, dance, contemporary circus, music, film projections, exhibitions, book launches, special conferences, play reading performances, workshops and student performances from all over the world will be presented in both performance halls, classic and unconventional, as well as on the main streets and squares of Sibiu. This year, FITS will showcase one of it’s most complex programme yet, including about 500 carefully selected events, in 67 venues, during 10 days, for 650.000 people who get to experience the creative side of life. The programme of FITS events is extended in 2017 to include the places of worship in Sibiu, Mărginimea Sibiului and the Transylvanian fortified churches route – The Evangelical Church in Cisnădie (Heltau), The Evangelical Church in Cisnădioara (Michelsberg), The Evangelical Church in Guşteriţa (Hammersdorf) , The Evangelical Church in Roşia (Rothberg) – thus adding a new dimension of the festival headlined by organ concerts performed by Romanian and international artists.

Of course, we’ve studied the programme quite carefully, and we find it hard to pick just some shows out of the many promising events. But still, there are some highlights we will be more than looking forward to!

brodsky-baryshnikov-SIBIU INTERNATIONAL THEATRE FESTIVAL 2017“BRODSKY/BARYSHNIKOV” is one of the first shows that caught our eye. Presented by the New Riga Theatre – Latvian state theatre, “BRODSKY/BARYSHNIKOV” is a one-man show directed by Alvis Hermanis. It is based on the poems of Nobel laureate, Joseph Brodsky, interpreted by renowned dancer, choreographer and American actor, Mikhail Baryshnikov. “BRODSKY/BARYSHNIKOV” was nominated for “Performance of the Year” at the Latvian Theatre Awards and the actor was nominated for “Actor of the Year” at the same awards ceremony. Alvin Hermanis has also received many awards, such as Europe Prize New Theatre Realities, Stanislavski Award, two Golden Mask awards (Moscow), Max Reinhardt Pen (Salzburg Festspiele), Nestroy Preis (Austria) and Wolf Konrad Award (Germany). He returns at FITS for the second year, after having received a star on the Sibiu Walk of Fame.

The two heritage-performances “Faust” and “Metamorphoses” directed by Silviu Purcarete, are also on our must-see list for this year. As this years marks 10th anniversary of Sibiu European Capital of Culture, it is not by chance that the Radu Stanca National Theatre is coming back with “Metamorphoses”, a performance that celebrated the events of 2007. And “Faust” has received such high praises over the years, that we could not even imagine FITS without it!

Another much awaited performance, the project “..Aquel Silverio” – “…That Silverio”, focuses on the current state of flamenco, and the main pillars of this art, such as Silverio Franconetti. It’s a production based on research, on the recovery, analysis, study and reconstruction of dance forms, singing, music and the way in which they were made.

Returning to Sibiu, Brenda Angiel Aerial Dance Company brings us two representations of “Air Condition”. They are planning to stage a performance that will impress the audience with suspended dancers, combining energy with flight over the stage and the artistry of modern dance. We’ll all get to see tango mixed with hip-hop and ballet, and live music, composed especially for this performance.

But of course, besides the indoor theatre, dance, circus and music performances at FITS, you can also take part in the outdoor street performances, play readings, special conferences, book launches, workshops, film screenings, the drama and art management universities convention or the Sibiu Performing Arts Market. As we dsibiu fits 2017o each year, we are all looking forward to the spectacular opening events, that will take place in the old town. Entrance is free for outdoor events, as well as for special events – special conferences, play readings and part of the film screenings.

FITS will keep you fully entertained these next 10 days! Access www.sibfest.ro to see the full programme, and to make sure you don’t miss out on anything!

And because at some point you will get hungry, access Travelscounter to get 10,15 or even 20% discount in all the best restaurants, coffee shops, pubs and clubs in Sibiu.

Enjoy Sibiu, and LOVE FITS!

Hey there #foodie! Let’s eat…outside!

If you are a #streetfood enthusiast, you’re in for a major treat! Because Sibiu Street FOOD Festival, the festival of hundreds of culinary recipes takes place in the city June 1st to 4th, in the Albert Huet Square.

Street Food Festival

It is a unique culinary experience, that travels through 9 Romanian cities this year : Oradea, Iasi, Sibiu, Arad, Cluj-Napoca, Brasov, Alba-Iulia, Timisoara and Bacau. The presence of Sibiu among the 9 cities is of high importance, as two years from now, in 2019, Sibiu will hold the title of European gourmet capital. It’s going to be the most important worldwide recognized project involving Sibiu since the European Capital of Culture of 2007. Taking this into consideration, Street FOOD Festival plans to bring a major contribution to the city’s development of gastronomy.

street food festival#streetfood lovers will get to enjoy an enormous variety of dishes, from savory burgers, pulled pork, creamy gelato, to pizza and many more. 40 carefully chosen vendors will be lininig up their best street food specialties from all over the world, from Asia, Hungary, Italy, Romania, America, Mexico and more.

Those who will come at the festival will get to enjoy the dishes of a street food celebrity and ambassador, Chef Foa. Chef Foa is the most fervent fan of the Street Food concept in Romania, being one of the few famous chefs who have devoted themselves to the whole idea and managed to develop a successful project built around the concept of streeStreet_Food_Festival_2017_02t food. Along with his team of chefs from Stradale and Flavours, he is going to offer some amazing culinary experiences! And some great #selfies for all of you #instagram lovers 😉

No festival is complete without music, so be prepared to enjoy not only amazing food, but some great live concerts too. The Street FOOD Festival stage will be home to some amazing acts. Children also have their own playground – the KIDS ZONE. And if you’re a fan of food and movies, you’ll get to nibble on some tasty treats while watching a good movie at The Outdoor Cinema.

Street FOOD Festival started it’s story back in 2016 in Cluj-Napoca, where over 50,000 foodies sampled the dishes of the participating chefs. Afterwards, Street FOOD Festival took place in Iasi, Oradea and there was also a special edition for Christmas, which brought to the festival several tens of thousands of people and hundreds of goodies to take home.

We’re defintely moving our “offices” in the Huet Square between June 1st and 4th, at the Sibiu Street FOOD Festival. Because we’re looking forward to compete in eating pizza, pancakes, burgers, waffles, tacos, burritos, sandwiches, and other food specialities from all over the world. street food festival

10 years in photos.

It was 10 years ago, in partnership with the capital of the Great Ducat of Luxembourg, that Sibiu won the title of European Capital of Culture. It was the year that finally decided Sibiu’s destiny, turning a small and dusty city in the most important cultural city of our country.

The hundreds of events that have taken place in 2007 have been thoroughly documented by Silvana Armat, photojournalist based in Sibiu. Faced with over 20.000 photos taken that year, Silvana began thinking about of a retrospective exhibition that would encompass the most important events of the year – cultural, social, political or press events. This was the birth of Focus Sibiu – the retrospective exhibition.

Focus Festival Sibiu

“The year of the Capital of Culture had so much to offer for any photographer, that the exhibition kind of developped itself. For a city like Sibiu, so poor in public events, this year was an explosion that amazed all of us. It was a year during which we all worked continuously, without feeling tired and experiencing some never before felt satisfactions.” declares Silvana Armat, the founder of the Focus Sibiu Retrospective Exhibition. Sebastian Marcovici joined this event 2 years later, and together, the 2 photographers created the longest-running photography exhibition in any city in Romania. In time more photographers and visual artists contribued to the making of this event. Dragos Dumitru, Ovidiu Matiu or Bogdan Brylynski are only a few of those who have exposed their creations within the Focus Sibiu Retrospective Exhibition. “I believe the actual dimension of Sibiu is best seen through this photography exhibition. We are extremely lucky to be living in Sibiu, to have access to so many events, and so many options, that we are required to reinvent ourselves each time we take out our cameras”, says Sebastian Marcovici.

10 years since the European Capital of Culture moment, the Focus Sibiu exhibition proposes a trip back in time.

Compared with the previous editions, Focus Sibiu 2017 will be a retrospective of all 10 years that have passed since it’s first event.

Focus Festival Sibiu

The opening event of Focus Sibiu – 10 years will take place this Monday, May 29th, beginning with 7 pm, in the inner courtyard of Sibiu’s City Hall. And the expo can be seen until June 17th, during the functioning hours of the City Hall – Monday to Thursday between 8 am and 4 pm, and Friday between 8 am and 1:30 pm.

Be sure to visit, if you want to witness the changes Sibiu has passed through these 10 years, from an old dusty town, to the worlwide sensation that it is today.

And as you’ll be right in the heart of the city, use the Travelscounter Venues page to make a discounted reservation for dinner in any of the hot spots – Weinkeller, La Turn, Lili’s, Tango, Union, Crama Sibiana. Enjoy!

More and more good news coming your way!

As you know by now, Sibiu is home to some great events, and Transilvania Tattoo Expo is one of them!

transilvania tattoo expo

We are super excited to introduce you to the 9th edition of Transilvania Tattoo Expo which takes place this weekend. This year, Transilvania Tattoo Expo will take place in a new venue, at Casa Armatei, on Victoriei Boulevard,no. 5.

For this year’s edition, Transilvania Tattoo Club wanted to bring together some of the greatest artists from all around the world. So be prepared for the coolest event yet!

As it has always been, the purpose of this event is to promote Sibiu as a modern and tolerant city to the new forms of artistic expression, and also to inform and educate the public about body art.

What makes this event awesome? It offers visitors an amazing opportunity to see how a really successful tattoo is performed. You have the possibility to interact with tattoo artists and you even have the opportunity to be tattooed by one of the artists present at this event! #feelingexcited & #feelinglucky sounds about right! And with 50 of the most known artists from around the world coming to this year’s edition, you sure do have options!

The artists are literally coming from every corner of the world: the United States of America, Spain, Mexico, Venezuela, Denmark and other countries. You’ll get to see Robert Hernandez, Iker “Don Fat” Ruiz, Liorcifer, Benjamin Moss, Maximo Lutz, Victor Policheri and many others.

the highlight of this year’s edition?

The participation of some really unique characters: Yallzee, the tattoo collector, Emilio Gonzalez and Red Skull with the gorgeous ladies America and Venus!

Emilio GonzalesEmilio and the beautiful America are coming for the second time in Sibiu. The 39 years old venezuelan is one of the most recognizable and most published body artists in the world, and is definitely one of the “celebrities” of the body modification world. He specializes in surgical procedures such as ear pointing, tongue splitting, scalpelled piercings, extreme implants and nipple removal and is generally considered one of the more radical artists currently working in the world. Of course, the lovely America lives up to the high standards, as she is one of the most beautiful and most appreciated models of the body modification world.

Red Skull, or Henry Rodriguez by his original name, has undergone plastic surgery for more than 130 hours over the past 7 years. All this so that he could transform Red Skullhimself into his childhood “hero” – Red Skull, the nazi leader, enemy of Captain America. All the procedures have been done by his good friend, none other than Emilio Gonzales. He’s had his eyes tattooed black, implants inserted in multiple areas of the face, he’s cut off a part of his nose and years, and he continued with tattooing his face in red and black. His partner, the exotic venezuelan dancer Venus Afrotida is promising a hot-hot-hot show for this year’s edition of Transilvania Tattoo Expo!

Last, but not least, the Expo is going to have the best jury this year, with Yallzee headlining the event. Yall Quinones – Yallzee – is Puerto Rico born, and he’s been attracted to art since childhood. His body has become a real work of art, as he has been tattooed by over 30 famous tattoo artists! He will trully be an impressive sight, so you might not want to miss this year’s edition of Transilvania Tattoo Expo. If anything, you will get to take a most valuable #selfie with some of the beauties and the “beasts” present!

Transilvania Tattoo Expo

The show wouldn’t be complete without some hard “steel”, so be prepared to admire some customized and classic motorcycles. During the 3 days of the convention, the public will be able to admire a series of wheels created by talentated Romanian and foreign bike builders.

So, amazing tattoo artists, tattoo seminars, and some mean wheels! This one’s not to be missed!

And most of all..be sure you don’t miss the crazy afterparties! Book your table using Travelscounter, and you’ll also get a 15% discount off the final bill!! Enjoy!

Since 2005, selected European museums have exceptionally opened for a night, free of charge, as part of European Museum Night. The event takes place on the closest Saturday to May 18th, simultaneously in countries that have signed the Council of Europe’s cultural convention.

Astra Museum Sibiu

The “Astra” National Museum Complex is a collection of museum units in Sibiu.

The most famous of these is the Museum of Traditional Folk Civilization “ASTRA” in Sibiu, located in the Dumbrava forest, on the way to Rasinari and Patinis.

For the longest night of Romanian and international culture, the Museum Night, the ASTRA Museum is offering an interactive program that will start this Saturday, May 20th, at 6 pm and end at 1 am.

Starting with 6:30 pm, the scene on the lake will welcome the “Ioan Macrea” Dance School.

The “Ioan Macrea” Dance School was founded in 2012. It is the institution that continues the choreographic tradition so beautifully shaped in Sibiu by Master Macrea and continued by his daughter, Silvia Macrea.

The school organizes popular dance classes for children, adolescents and adults, and the choreographic section also includes modern ballet and dance classes.

Every year, hundreds of children choose to attend the dance classes of the “Ioan Macrea” School, where they learn folk games and customs, from professionals of the world famous Junii Sibiului.

At 8.00 pm, the Rasinari Calusari will take the stage.

This ensemble, composed of over 100 members aged between 3 and 26 years, has been guided by the same man, Tica Canean, for over 38 years. His daughter Mărioara Ţichindelean, together with her family, have continued his work for the past 11 years, wanting to carry the tradition of folk dances and traditional customs specific to the place.

At 8.30 pm, it’s time for one of Sibiu’s boldest musical projects : Domino. Astra Museum Sibiu

The group have started their artistic career in January 2013 in Vienna, representing Romania at the International Tourism Fair. DOMINO is an alternative rock band, but manages to be unique due to the many influences borrowed from traditional folk music, and the combination of instruments used.

The highlight of this year’s event is the amazing concert of the longest lasting Romanian rock band : Phoenix.

Phoenix is a living legend of Romanian music, which has lasted more than half a century. Romania’s longest-lasting rock band, headed by well-known Nicu Covaci, is making history on stage at Lake of the Outdoor Museum in Dumbrava Sibiului.

From the repertoire of the band founded in the 60’s in Timisoara, you’ll get to hear some of their most poppular songs. So make sure you’re at the scene by the lake at 10 pm!

Besides amazing concerts and dance shows, there are a lot of other fun activities to attend while in the Dumbrava forest Museum.

Between 6 pm and 11 pm, at the Country fair you’ll have the chance to witness some culinary demonstrations – the making of traditional doughnuts and Roman culinary dishes.

Between 6 pm and 9 pm, the Castrum Novis Association is holding archery, arrow making , leather items making, and blacksmithing wokshps. The Veteris Milites Association is holding mint, jewelery making, ancient writing, and ancient games workshops.

The Household in Hodac will also have a part in this event.

Sibiu’s Teatrul Mic – or Small Theater – will present some interactive Romanian tales. To be more precise, visitors will have the opportunity to be actors in the childhood stories written by the beloved Ion Creanga.

Of course, the other entities within The “Astra” National Museum Complex will take part in this event.

The Museum of Universal Ethnography “Franz Binder”, located in the Hermes House, Square, no. 11, is hosting the “Travel” Exhibition. Between 6 pm and 12:30 am, visitors will have the chance to “take a trip” around the world with the help of all the items featured in this exhibition. Whether it’s musical instruments, religious artefacts or simple decorations, the 142 items, brought from 75 countries, will take us on a trip to Africa, Asia, Australia, and many more remote islands and places.

The “Emil Sigerus” Museum of Saxon Ethnography and Folk Art, located within the House of Arts, in the Small Square no 21 is currently hosting an exhibition showing the ways and means of the saxons. This exhibition has been organised in the context of all the events marking 500 years since the start of Martin Luther’s protestant reform, which has been widely spread throughout Transylvania also, the home of so many saxons.

There is plenty for you to do and see tomorrow. The entrance will be free of charge in all ASTRA Museum units, starting with 6.00 pm. So enjoy! And take the time to have some romanian food for dinner, also! Hilton’s Camara Boierului is right next to the Astra village museum, and if you get your discount code from Travelscounter, you’ll pay 10% less for your bill!

FeeliNg…jazzy?

You should, as today marks the start of the 47th edition of the Sibiu International Jazz Festival.

jazz festival sibiu

Sibiu Jazz Festival is unique in Romania, considering the longevity, consistency and the impressive number of celebrities that have participated over the years. It is the oldest festival of its kind in the country and one of the oldest jazz festivals in the world, which is why Sibiu has been declared, since the 80s, the “Jazz Capital” of Romania.

In the early 70s, the first three editions of the National Jazz Festival took place in Ploiesti. The festival is moved to Sibiu in 1974, enjoying respect and support, even from the communist political officials, being organized by the dedicated team of the Jazz Club Sibiu, the most powerful jazz club in the country at that time.

For years, the scene of Sibiu has presented the values of native jazz.

There is no Romanian jazzman, whose evolution has not been marked in some way by the Sibiu Jazz Festival.

And the list, even incomplete, of foreign musicians who have evolved in the Festival speaks for the great respect this event has enjoyed through the years : Ron Carter, Toots Thielemans, Archie Shepp, Didier Lockwood, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Jan Garbarek, Bill Evans, Charles Lloyd, Birelli Lagrene, Chucho Valdes, Arturo Sandoval.

In 2005, Sibiu Jazz Festival is recognized as the most important event in Romania, becoming the first festival in our country, member of Europe’s most important network of jazz festivals and promoters: Europe Jazz Network.

The huge team behind the success of this great festival is coordinated by Simona Adina Maxim, Executive Director and H. Johannes Konstantin Schmidt, Artistic Director and founder member of Sibiu Jazz Club.

The festival has evolved through the years, and this year’s edition marks a series of novelties.

One of the highly anticipated ones is the free entrance to all of this year’s events.

The new “Romanian Jazz Meeting” project aims to be a launching pad for Romanian musicians to the international jazz stage. The project – the only one of it’s kind in Romania – is looking to promote Romanian Jazz artists and their music, through concerts attended also by jazz promoters, critics and journalists. And we’re in for some delightful concerts, as this projects gives Romanian jazz musicians a chance to share the stage with some of the best interntional jazz artists of the moment!Jazz for Kids

The festival is also about education. “Jazz for Kids” is a musical education project for children between the ages of 6 and 14. The youngsters get to know the history of jazz and its influence on other musical genres, and they actively participate in the recognition of some musical passages from their favorite cartoons. The brave ones get to even become familiar with the instruments. Every evening dedicated to the project “Jazz for Kids” will be completed by an acoustic moment, full of surprises, prepared by two pianists of 10 and 12 years, winners of the National Music Olympics.

If you chose Sibiu for this weekend, you’re in for a real treat! Sibiu Jazz Festival’s line-up is amazing!

Looking for hidden gems while in Sibiu?

We’ ve got the perfect spot! An industrial park right outside of town houses a unique location : an equestrian club. Don’t let the access way fool you…although it is located in an industrial park, and the entrance has the mandatory NO ENTRY signs, all tourists and visitors are more than welcome to carry on past the entry point, and arrive at a true haven! It’s the only place this close to Sibiu where you can experience the joy of riding a horse. The instructors also speak fluent German and English, so you know you’ll be in good hands! And if you want your children to enjoy a nice experience, this is the perfect place. The club provides an instructor that is specialized in working with children.

Ecvestria Club stretches for more than 2500 meters, and it offers accommodation for those wanting to spend the night. It also features a shop for you to complete your riding attire.

And most importantly, once you arrive here you can take a break away from the noise, and enjoy some Romanian and international specialties at the on-site restaurant and terrace.
