A few days ago we officially entered astronomical autumn. With the autumn equinox the days are shorter and the nights longer. Slowly, the cold weather is also installed, so it is good to have some warm clothing with you at all times. Don’t avoid going out into nature! Autumn is the best painter and you have our word that you do not want to miss the colors and the landscape that this season offers in Sibiu. Sibiu remains a lively city in the coming days, and we’re here to tell you what events you shouldn’t miss this autumn, and which are the best venues you could spend your time in!

A full AUTUMN week & weekend

Cibin Fest continues in the Big Square until Sunday. Don’t forget that for the final 4 evenings of this event you’ll get to enjoy great shows from Hermannstadt 7.

theatreAt the BIS Theater (Stefan cel Mare, no. 56), this Saturday and Sunday there will be two performances of a Romanian-British Vanner Collective show-event. It’s about “All That’s Wonderful in the World.” These two are the last outdoor shows of this season. For the romantic and nostalgic ones, we recommend “La Cenerentola – Gioachino Rossini” (Cinderella), a two-act opera, after a libretto by Jacopbruncho Ferreti inspired by the classic fairy tale of our childhood. The show takes place this Saturday at 19:00 at the Sibiu State Philharmonic. And Sunday, again at the Philharmonic, at 11:00 and 17:00 you can watch “Goe and his folks” a musical by Roman Vlad and Stela Popescu. If you venture further and reach the neighboring county at Cincşor,you must know that on October 1, the traditional autumn “Harvest Day” takes place. A good opportunity to take advantage of carefully selected Transylvanian dishes! And there’s more to this event : you can see a painting exhibition and you can attend the recital of Hakon Kornstadt, within the fortified church of Cincsor. Places at this brunch are limited, and the ticket price is 75 lei. Make sure you book your spot here

Cool concert with special guests

Imperiirisum Live gives us a crazy rock night! This Saturday, September 30th, at 21:00, a Krypton Unplugged concert is announced alongside Rafael (ex. Iris).

The organizers say it will be an extraordinary evening, because the band is at its peak, and the newly founded Krypton Unplugged project promises to be of great value. Entry cost is 20 lei. You can make reservations here for this particular evening, and you will get 10% discount off the bill! You can make reservations for Imperium Live for Friday also. They’re celebrating autumn’s “Harvest Day” with good traditional food and live music performed by Maria Cojocaru and Alex Petre.

You know how to shoot a bow?

Also this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, in the ASTRA Traditional Folk Civilization Museum, bow arrowa 3D ArcheryNational Contest takes place. It is the first competition of its kind in Sibiu and will take place on a special course put together by the organizers. So far, there are 104 participants! Surely we will have what to see. In the same contest, disabled people can participate, for whom a specially arranged route will be considered. Competition requires imitation of hunting conditions as accurately as possible. Participants will shoot from a distance of 5 to 50 meters at different angles, and there will be naturallyRomanian food sized targets. Interestingly, visitors can see close competition and even interact with participants while moving from one target to another. In complete safety, guaranteed by the organizers, they will be able to admire the skills of the archers, the variety of arches, starting from the historical replicas and ending with the last generation, capable of the highest precision. And if all this hunting will get you hungry, it’s good to know that you can stop by for some 5 stars romanian food, on your way back to the city. Give Hilton’s Camara Boierului a try, if you want to taste pure goodness, with a 10% discount off your bill!

Motivation to hit the gym

fitness championship

And as we can’t have a week without a sport, it’s good to know that on the 29th and 30th of September Sibiu hosts the National Bodybuilding and Fitness Championship 2017 finals. Friday is for training sessions and putting together last details, and the competition itself starts Saturday, at 11:00. The athletes and their muscles can be seen in all their splendor at the Transylvania Hall. Entrance is free of charge.

If you love science

Autumn comes with a whole night dedicated to scientists and technology lovers. This is the “Night of Researchers” event, organized by “Lucian Blaga” University. The event is known at a European level and it gives you the chance to meet researchers from different fields and take part in unusual scientific actions, organized in a fun and unconventional atmosphere. So, September 29th , starting with 16.00, the fascinating universe of science opens its doors in Sibiu for the fourth consecutive year. Experiments, exhibitions, contests, robot shows, lab visits and many other activities for audiences of all ages will be organized this night.

researcher's nightWe’re thinking you can’t miss such adventures! All fun and play this weekend – which means you’ll have another great one in Sibiu!

If you are in Sibiu this week, HERE’S A QUICK GUIDE ON WHAT TO DO.

First of all, take a look at the best venues and locations in Sibiu. Aside from all the festivals and events, it’s good to know where you can enjoy great food, at discounted rates. Second of all, please dress well and take your umbrella with you. We might see some sun, but there’s a better chance of rain, so it’s good to be prepared.
Then, the World Peace Day, celebrated worldwide on September 21st, will be marked in Sibiu by a Human Chain as a sign of peace. It all takes place at the entrance on pedestrian Balcescu street from the ASTRA Park, starting at 15.00.
It is also very important to know that Friday, September 22 was declared a “Carless Day”. Thus, between 8:00 and 20:00, access will be restricted to the Small Square, Huet Square, Schiller Square, the Archives Street and the Centumvirilor Street. The markets and streets will be car-free that day.
All those who choose the bicycle as a means of transport on Friday will have free access to the Gong Theater Spectacles, the Zoo, the People’s Bath and the Astra Traditional Folk Civilization Museum (the outdoor museum in Dumbrava Sibiului). Shared public transport, buses in the city will also be free of charge in the same time slot.

A festival of 11 days

CibinFEST 2017 piata mare sibiucan easily be called the event of the week. So it must be first in our guide. It lasts 11 days, from September 21st to October 1st, and it’s the kind of event you can’t miss. CibinFEST takes place in the Great Market. There will be a giant tent, an autumn fair, and a fun park.  And lots of great food!
This year’s event comes with two German weekends. The first will be animated by a new Oktoberfest band – Die Dorfer from Austria, and the second one’s fun will be provided by the Hermannstadt ’07 Symphony.
CibinFEST is very popular because it caters to all types of taste. While babies have fun in the amusement park, food lovers can choose between grilled chops, delicious sausages and homemade pickles, and music lovers enjoy concerts every day, starting with 19:00.
Access to the event is free of charge. You can find more information here, and most importantly you can make reservations if you want to stay at the tables.
CibinFest is truly a colorful, fun event, perfect for you to try it!

The country’s most important male tennis tournament

For a few days now, we’ve been enjoying Sibiu Open 2017 – the most important male tennis tournament and the only ATP Challenger tournament in Romania. Couldn’t leave this out of our guide! It started Saturday, September 16th and it will end on September 24th. There have already been some interesting days, with the first results coming in, and with the First Lady making an appearance. And for sure the best is yet to come, if you consider that 13 US Open participants are at this year’s Sibiu Open also!tennis

It’s definitely something you could try, as it is an exciting and relaxing option at the same time. Tennis is also called the “white sport”. The name comes, on the one hand, from the equipment of the players which were completely white in the past, and on the other hand it is a clean competition, without cheating and with respectable players, being considered one of the most beautiful sports in the world. Take a look at the next days’ schedule, and take your pick.

A festival and a musical journey over time

sibiu Saturday, September 23rd and Sunday, September 24th, you can find yourself in the midst of the youngest music festival in Sibiu.
The first edition of the “Street Music Festival” takes place in the Small Square, and the special guests are the “Budapest Ragtime Band”, which the organizers say is one of Europe’s most beloved entertainment bands.
Public access to this event is free of charge.
This year’s edition is all about “RAGTIME” – the style of optimistic and engaging music that has caused a stir between 1895 and 1918. The style was chosen for this first edition in the context of this year’s celebration of Scott Joplin, “The King of Ragtime,” who passed away 100 years ago. So if you love traveling in time, “Street Music Festival” gives you this opportunity.

For Comic Books Lovers

comic stripAnd if you happen to be in the Small Square between September 22nd and 24th, you should check out the Hermes House. It houses the 5th edition of the Comic Strip Festival – a festival for comic books afficionados, collectors and children. For this event, over 30 comic book designers and authors from 6 countries (France, Bulgaria, Belgium, Germany, Serbia and Romania) are coming to Sibiu. So, be prepared for workshops, comic books matches, exhibitions, live-drawing, conferences, projections and album releases.
If you love comic books, this festival is not to be missed because it is one of the leading events in the graphic arts field in Romania.

LETS’ GUIDE YOU TO SOME POETRY

poets in transylvaniaOver 30 poets from over 15 countries on three continents have gathered in Sibiu for the 5th edition of theInternational Poetry Festival. Dancesport, ballet, guitar, books and…muscles are the proposals for how you can spend your free time in Sibiu this weekend. All in all, I have to tell you that from Friday to Sunday we will enjoy great weather. The Institute of Meteorology has reported that we’re going to have plenty of sunshine, with temperatures from 29 to 31 degrees, and the wind will blow lightly, just enough to make the heat bearable.

So, take advantage of the stray summer during these autumn days and check out the best venues in Sibiu. You have a wide range of choices, both in the middle of Sibiu and beyond, in locations surrounded by idyllic landscapes, clean air and adventure.

Books make you richer.

First on our list of events is the Sibiu Book Festival – Open Minds, a – you guessed it – book festival. We welcome the idea of such an event especially when you think that we live in a world where technology has the bad habit of resibiu free timeplacing the interest for books and reading. And “a bookless room is like a soulless body” Cicero once said. Sibiu Book Festival is a relaxing festival, perfect for your free time, that combines the pleasure of reading with quality music as it perfectly fades into the weekend. It takes place between September 14th and 17th , in the Small Square. There will be many books, new titles, special offers, and a collection and donation campaign.

Did you know, for example, that the smallest book in the world has 0.9 mm both in length and in height, like a grain of salt, but it has 30 pages, out of which 3 are coloured? Or that the Bible is the world’s best-selling book, that Shakespeare invented over 17,000 words and that Essenza Wine & Books in Sibiu is a place like no other where you can combine good wine with jazz and old books? You can make reservations for wine tastings and events using the Essenza Wine&Books page. And the best part…you’ll have 10% discount off the bill!

How to lift a bus and be seen by people in 89 countries.

Saturday, September the 16th, between 14:30 and 20:00, the world’s most powerful people meet in the Big Square. “Strongman Champions League Romania” will create a part of Goliath’s world in Sibiu. There will be buses drawn by people, huge wheels and stones and nine athletes will compete over their muscles. It is a “power lifting” competition set up in 2008 following the “World’s Strongest Man” circuit.

Participants are the world’s best athletes who face over 20 contest stages, based on strength, skills and resistance. Sibiu hosts 5 of them, and the rest are taking place elsewhere in the world. At the end of the competition the most powerful man on the planet is chosen. Sounds…heavy, right? The event has global coverage being transmitted by the Eurosport Channel within a 52-minute show to be broadcast in 89 countries.

dancesportDance the weekend away.

This Friday and Saturday the secrets of dancesport are uncovered in Sibiu. The Transylvanian Grand Prix 2017takes place at the Transylvania Hall. If we are to believe the organisers, it is the most important dance event in Romania. Every year, there are over 2,000 athletes from all over the world, and over 20 World Ranking Pairs have confirmed that they will be at Sibiu. The competition is intended for amateur athletes participating in World Open Standard and World Open Latino, and it is structured on age groups. Tickets for this event can be purchased on kompostor.ro But beware! If you decide to go, you will definitely want to go out dancing.

And there’s no better place for that than the ultra glamorous Liquid the Club. As always, Saturday night comes with special events, and there’s no exception this weekend! Celebrity Daniela Crudu and the cool Silviu Andrei DJ are in the house this Saturday at Liquid! Make reservations for this (or any other) party using the Liquid the Club page, and you’ll get 15% discount off the bill! Cheers to that!

Food. Awesome food. Street food.

The best part of this coming weekend? An event we’ve been very much waiting for – “Foodie – Street Food Cuisine”, the awesomest culinary festival. The organisers want to take out the culinary art outside the restaurants’ kitchens, to take it to Cetatii Street – the most beautiful street in Sibiu – and to offer three really memorable days! There’s also very good music in store for us, with the help of “The Noise”, “Les Elephants Bizarres”, “Omelette”, “GOLAN”, “Yellow” and “Sarmalele Reci”. Some of the best street food is just waiting for all of us to sample it. We’re talking grilled goodies, burgers, paella, waffles, ice-cream, all that’s good in this world 😉 And we could tell you a lot about this event, but wouldn’t you rather see it for yourself?

street food sibiu

Especially when it takes place on one of the most interesting areas of Sibiu, near the third fortification belt, built between 1357-1366. The three towers of the guilds, the Gunsmiths Tower, the Carpenters Tower and the Potters Tower were built in the 14th-15th centuries, and the way they have preserved their appearance over thousands of years is remarkable. So make sure you get to see them this weekend!

A more delicate touch.

We could not finish the list of events without recommending the opening of the Sibiu Opera Festival. The event marks the start of the 2017-2018 season of the Sibiu Ballet Theatre and takes place on September 15th at 19:00 at the Thalia Hall. The show opening the season is “Peer Gynt”, a contemporary dance choreographed by Aleisha Gardner, on the live music of musicians Monica Florescu – Fernandez and Makcim Fernandez Samodaiev. The show is extremely popular, so maybe you will take advantage of your free time and attend it. You can buy tickets from the ticket offices of the State Philharmonic of Sibiu and kompostor.ro.

That being said, we look forward to a weekend with great food, books, and dancing. Hope you have a great one!

Sibiu Music Fest, a Big reason to party in the Big Square.

Let the madness begin…’cause this week, in Sibiu, we’ll definetly be hearing the sound of music. From traditional music, to pop-rock, hip-hop or classical music, there’s plenty of music festivals to choose from.

Sibiu Music Fest finds itself at its first edition. And you shouldn’t miss it, because this Saturday, 9th of September, the stage will be filled with some of the most loved Romanian artists : Delia, Connect-R, Whats Up, Alina Eremia, Puya, Vescan Official, Lora, Irina Rimes, Raluka, Maxim, Dorian Popa, ADDA, XOXO Oficial, Rita, ARIAS – and these are just a few!

sibiu music fest

The good news? The Big Square is filled with terraces on which you can enjoy the concerts while at the same time enjoying great dishes and drinks to match the fun. La Turn, La Taifas, Mustache Caffe or Perla Timis Ice Caffe are just a few of our recommendationsWe’re talking about wide terraces, with good visibility towards the stage, and plenty of space for the little ones to consume their energy. For all new moms out there, it’s also good to know that Mustache Caffe is the first place is Sibiu to post the International sign for breastfeeding, and welcomes breastfeeding moms.

The even better news? There’s an amazing afterparty, starting at 23:00, at Liquid The Club. It’s your chance to see and meet all these amazing artists, regardless if you are a crazy fan or not. And either way, a #selfie is worth taking!

liquid the club

It’s going to be another epic party, with Dj Cipi Hampu and DJ Zara Alex, alongside MC SO taking care of all the fun. So, you better write it downthis Saturday is fun day! Make sure you make reservations using the Travelscounter – Liquid the Club Page, and you’ll get access to the best party, and 15% discount off the bill!

Romanian traditions and festivals in their home.

muzeul astraAnother must-stop for this weekend? The Astra Village Museum, in the Dumbrava Forest. Besides getting to visit one of Transylvania’s most valuable and important museums, you’ll get to enjoy a special event, filled with tradition. This Saturday and Sunday, between 11:00 am and 20:00 pm, it’s all about the 12th edition of the “Folk Music Bands and Fanfares” Festival.

If you ask usit’s worth it, as it is a little bit more than just a festival. It’s about tradition, dancing, a true celebration of the traditional Romanian village. Our country is one of the few in Europe that can still pride itself with stories hidden in songs by the keepers of traditional custom. The Lake Stage will host a Country Fair – where there will be traditional cooking, fresh air, and lots of good cheer. So let’s just say that as a Romanian tourist at this Festival you’ll rediscover yourself, and as a foreign tourist, it will be your chance to discover us!

Before heading back to the city, you might want to stop by Hilton Sibiu. You can have a hearty meal at Camara Boierului – their traditional restaurant. Or maybe a subtle drink at the English Bar, or a more fancy dinner at the exquisite Versailles Restaurant. And if you use the Travelscounter ALL DAY DISCOUNT, you’ll also get a 10% discount on your bill!

The George Enescu International Festival

Classical music lovers, rejoyce! This weekend, The George Enescu International reaches Sibiu. It is one of the most impressive festivals of this kind. Just think about it: 80 events and over 3.000 guests from Romania and abroad, during 23 days of festival. The first events took place on September 2nd in Bucharest. For Sibiu, 5 recitals have been announced. The first one, bearing the „Enescu” name, will take place at the Lutheran Cathedral in the Huet Square. The L’Arpeggiata Ensemble & the countertenor Philippe Jaroussky will take the stage for the first time in Sibiu this Sunday, September 10th, at 19:00. They have already increased the number of seats by 20, to match the great demand. Same goes for Maxim Vangerov’s recital, September 22nd, at the Thalia Hall. You can still find available tickets for the rest of the recitals. And we’re talking about the recitals of Quatuor DIOTIMA , Viktoria Vassilenko – piano, and Erzhan Kulibaev – violin

george enescu festival

Here’s a tip: you can purchase tickets on eventim.ro and from partner stores like Vodafone, Diverta and Humanitas Bookstores.

Take advantage of this great festival, dress to impress and enjoy the mirage of classical music. And keep in mind that all these recitals will have you roaming the central areas of the city – the Nicolae Bălcescu Boulevard, the Big and Small Squares. So, for when you get hungry or feel like unwinding, take a look at the Travelscounter Venues section to find great restaurants and locations centraly located, which offer 10% discount off the bill.

Rivers of good beer and good fun.

All this talk about music, fun and food made us thirsty, and we’re in so much luck! Craft Fest Sibiu brings us the secrets of beer, the drink that had its recipe first carved în stone more than 5000 years ago! This Saturday and Sunday, the Cetății Street will be home to Craft Fest Sibiu, a festival that aims to promote craft beer brands from Sibiu and the rest of the country. Between 11:00 and 23:00 you’ll get the chance to sample a dozen kinds of beer, straight from their producerscraft fest sibiu

The producers will also introduce you to what are the traits of a good beer, how it should be consumed, and with which type of food it can be paired. Good things to know, if you think how much we all love beer. Romanians alone drank 30 billion beers last year!

Oh, and women should definetly take advantage of this festival. The relentless british researchers say that women who consume beer have an increased cognitive activity. In other words, they’re smarter! How’s that for a final argument? 😉

And on this note, we hope you have a really fun weekend in Sibiu! You sure have plenty of activities to choose from.

Let’s talk about recipes. Good recipes.

Like when you “add” a celebrity chef to an iconic location in Sibiu. And it seems like this is the best recipe for La Turn, the first restaurant to open its gates in the Big Square. After a very successful appearance in a top cooking show on national television, Chef Erdei Lorant has joined the team of La Turn and has been, for a couple of weeks now, running the kitchen of the location we all know and love.

La Turn has always been a popular spot, mostly due to its perfect location, both in the Big and Small Square. Over the years, the chefs there have tried to leave their mark on the place, and opinions have been rather…diverse. While others loved the place and the food, some only appreciated the place. You could say some are pickier, but one must acknowledge the fact that when it comes to food you have to search quite a bit until you find that perfect…recipe.

chef erdei lorantWith this new (and very promising) addition to its team, it might seem that La Turn has found the perfect recipe. Chef Erdei Lorant was born in Satu Mare, and now a new and very cute “factor” – his baby girl – made his set camp in Sibiu. He has worked in important restaurants in Hungary, Germany, and France. He took part in a famous Romanian cooking show, in Chef Scarlatescu’s team. And although he didn’t take home the big prize, he was one of the most appreciated competitors of the show’s edition, being the competitor who was highlighted by the courage to offer the jury bold and tasteful dishes. This led him to the semifinals of the competition, where he won the people’s love and sympathy.
And this super talent is now head of this great restaurant in the heart of Sibiu, where he waits for you with a new and amazing touch.
The new menu of La Turn is now more condensed, while at the same time offering something for every taste! From appetizers to salads, hard-to-pronounce mains, enticing desserts, and even pizza, you can have a true culinary experience at La Turn. So there you have it…the perfect location, and the perfect menu! We watched Chef Lorant in action in the kitchen, and we can say…he is superstar material! And while he got busy preparing an awesome dish, we got busy asking him a couple of questions.

Travelscounter: Which specialty from the new menu would you recommend to your customers? lamb chops

Chef Erdei Lorant: Personally, I am a big fan of the lamb chops in aromatic herbs crust. And if you’re looking for something lighter, you could try some salads specially designed by different varieties: chicken, beef, salmon, shrimp.

T: What’s your opinion about Romanian cuisine?

E. L.: Our Traditional cuisine is a bit outdated. It’s rich and varied, but I think that reinterpreting Romanian dishes is essential if we want to grow in this area.

T: What is the concept of La Turn and what does it bring new to Sibiu from a culinary point of view?

E.L.: Regarding what we want to do … we’ve made a collage between French, Italian and traditional cuisine. And I can say that some of our specialties must be tried at least once in a life!

beef saladHaving tried the chef’s recommendation – the lamb chops – we must say that new menu, new chef, new flavors… seems perfect for us!

And what’s really great is that if you make a reservation for the La Turn using Travelscounter, you will have a 10% discount on your final bill. So give the new menu a try. Chef Lorant and La Turn will not disappoint!

Mil nove cem e quarenta e seite..or 1947. A complicated number which I once learned over a good laugh, a good glass of red wine and some delicious Cataplana. The number still remains the only thing I know how to pronounce in Portuguese. The food however, I’ve managed to sample a bit more of, and dishes like Cataplana have moved up on my scale of preferences.

Cataplana is a combination of several varieties of fish and seafood, to which potatoes, bell peppers, onions, various spices and even some chorizo sausage are added. The name of the dish is given by the utensil it is cooked in, a copper two-pans kind of pressure cooker.

The Cataplana is a peculiar and unique Portuguese cooking utensil, whose origin is still little known, since there are no official historical records of its appearance and creation. And the food cooked in it has become a Portuguese signature dish.

You can fall in love – if you haven’t already – with Cataplana, right here in the old Sibiu, at Old Lisbon Restaurant. It’s the only portuguese style restaurant that has ever existed in Sibiu!

At Old Lisbon, the Cataplana is cooked carrefully and keeps the traditional Portugal flavour. Pair it with some good wine, and with a 10% discount you can get using travelscounter.com, and you’ll have the perfect recipe for a perfect dinner!

Enjoy!

In 2012 he joined Horia Brenciu and HB Orchestra for their concerts in Bucharest and Sibiu. Together, they’re going to do an accoustic session this Friday night, 14th April at 21.00.

Actually, each Monday you can sample some good quality theater, while enjoying a lovely dinner and a glass of wine.

This Monday, April 10th, it’s time for some MONTAGNE RUSSE, an intelligent comedy with Cristina Blaga and Anton Balint, a show about courage, strength, intelligence, relationships and love! The term Montagne Russe means rollercoaster,a popular type of entertainment, developed for amusement and modern themed parks.

The show of April 10th will be about a roller coaster full of joy and cheerfulness. And a bit about real problems in real life.

Coming to see this play at Atrium, you’ll be able to meet two young actors, portraying challenges, comedy, smiles, love stories, stories drawn from our daily world.

Cristina Blaga and Anton Balint are actors at the “Radu Stanca” National Theater. They are known for their performances in “Zbang” (A Musical Fantasy), “Romeo and Juliet”, “Faust”, and more.
