FeeliNg…jazzy?
You should, as today marks the start of the 47th edition of the Sibiu International Jazz Festival.

Sibiu Jazz Festival is unique in Romania, considering the longevity, consistency and the impressive number of celebrities that have participated over the years. It is the oldest festival of its kind in the country and one of the oldest jazz festivals in the world, which is why Sibiu has been declared, since the 80s, the “Jazz Capital” of Romania.
In the early 70s, the first three editions of the National Jazz Festival took place in Ploiesti. The festival is moved to Sibiu in 1974, enjoying respect and support, even from the communist political officials, being organized by the dedicated team of the Jazz Club Sibiu, the most powerful jazz club in the country at that time.
For years, the scene of Sibiu has presented the values of native jazz.
There is no Romanian jazzman, whose evolution has not been marked in some way by the Sibiu Jazz Festival.
And the list, even incomplete, of foreign musicians who have evolved in the Festival speaks for the great respect this event has enjoyed through the years : Ron Carter, Toots Thielemans, Archie Shepp, Didier Lockwood, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Jan Garbarek, Bill Evans, Charles Lloyd, Birelli Lagrene, Chucho Valdes, Arturo Sandoval.
In 2005, Sibiu Jazz Festival is recognized as the most important event in Romania, becoming the first festival in our country, member of Europe’s most important network of jazz festivals and promoters: Europe Jazz Network.
The huge team behind the success of this great festival is coordinated by Simona Adina Maxim, Executive Director and H. Johannes Konstantin Schmidt, Artistic Director and founder member of Sibiu Jazz Club.
The festival has evolved through the years, and this year’s edition marks a series of novelties.
One of the highly anticipated ones is the free entrance to all of this year’s events.
The new “Romanian Jazz Meeting” project aims to be a launching pad for Romanian musicians to the international jazz stage. The project – the only one of it’s kind in Romania – is looking to promote Romanian Jazz artists and their music, through concerts attended also by jazz promoters, critics and journalists. And we’re in for some delightful concerts, as this projects gives Romanian jazz musicians a chance to share the stage with some of the best interntional jazz artists of the moment!
The festival is also about education. “Jazz for Kids” is a musical education project for children between the ages of 6 and 14. The youngsters get to know the history of jazz and its influence on other musical genres, and they actively participate in the recognition of some musical passages from their favorite cartoons. The brave ones get to even become familiar with the instruments. Every evening dedicated to the project “Jazz for Kids” will be completed by an acoustic moment, full of surprises, prepared by two pianists of 10 and 12 years, winners of the National Music Olympics.
